Help
Most questions are answered below. If yours isn't, or something's broken, or you'd like Lucille to do something new, send us a report (in Lucille, Settings → About → Report a problem fills in your system details for you).
We're a band, not a software company. We read everything, but we can't always reply. Bugs get fixed in the next free release.
System requirements
- macOS 11 or later, Apple silicon or Intel. AU, VST3 and Standalone.
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. VST3 and Standalone.
- A DAW that hosts AU or VST3 plug-ins, or none at all: the Standalone app runs on its own.
Installing on macOS
- Open the downloaded
.pkg. - Click through the licence. Under Customize you can untick formats you don't use; the factory presets are always installed.
- Enter your Mac password when asked, then open your DAW and rescan plug-ins if Lucille doesn't show up.
Installing a newer version over an older one upgrades it in place. Your own presets are never touched.
Installing on Windows, and the SmartScreen warning
The Windows installer isn't code-signed yet (signing costs more than a free synth makes), so Windows warns about it. It's the same installer either way.
- If your browser says the file isn't commonly downloaded, choose Keep.
- When SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
- When asked whether to let an unknown publisher make changes, click Yes.
- Leave VST3 and Standalone ticked unless you don't want one of them, and finish the installer.
Only download Lucille from this site. Anywhere else, you can't be sure it's ours.
Lucille isn't showing up in my DAW
Most DAWs only look for new plug-ins when asked. Rescan, then look for Lucille under the maker Apple Eyes.
- Ableton Live: Settings → Plug-Ins → Rescan. On macOS, turn on "Use Audio Units" or "Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders".
- Logic Pro: Settings → Plug-in Manager, select Lucille, then Reset & Rescan Selection.
- FL Studio: Options → Manage plugins → Find more plugins.
- Cubase: Studio → VST Plug-in Manager → Rescan.
- Bitwig Studio: Settings → Locations → Plug-ins, then rescan.
- REAPER: Preferences → Plug-ins → VST → Re-scan.
Downloading song patches
Every Apple Eyes song made with Lucille has its patches free on the Lucille page: use Download patches under the song, or the link that fetches every song's patches at once. No email needed.
Importing a song pack
- Download the pack's
.zip. You don't need to unzip it. - In Lucille, open the preset browser and choose Import pack….
- Pick the
.zip. Lucille says how many presets it imported; they appear under the Apple Eyes category.
Importing the same pack again replaces those presets, so you never get duplicates. You can also copy the .json files into your user presets folder by hand.
Where presets live
- Your presets (and imported packs):
Documents/Lucille/Presets/Userin your home folder, on both macOS and Windows. - Factory presets, shared by every format:
/Library/Application Support/Lucille/Factory Presetson macOS,C:\ProgramData\Lucille\Factory Presetson Windows. Installers replace these on every upgrade, so save your own sounds as user presets.
Uninstalling
Windows: Settings → Apps → Lucille → Uninstall. Your presets and settings are kept.
macOS: there's no uninstaller. Drag these to the Bin (you'll need your password):
/Applications/Lucille.app/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Lucille.component/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Lucille.vst3/Library/Application Support/Lucille(the factory presets)
To remove your own presets and settings too, also delete ~/Documents/Lucille and ~/Library/Application Support/Lucille. On Windows they're in Documents\Lucille and %APPDATA%\Lucille.
Turning off the usage count
Once a day Lucille sends an anonymous check-in so we know how many people use it. To stop it, open Settings (the cog in Lucille's top bar) → Privacy and switch off the usage count. "Check for new songs and updates" is a separate switch. What's sent, and why.
